A discussion on duality

I had started writing a very complex piece on duality and decided that if anyone ever starts reading this I would first need to discuss the term duality for a few days.

Webster online has nothing on duality so here is their definition of dualism
1 : a theory that considers reality to consist of two irreducible elements or modes
2 : the quality or state of being dual or of having a dual nature
3 a : a doctrine that the universe is under the dominion of two opposing principles one of which is good and the other evil b : a view of human beings as constituted of two irreducible elements (as matter and spirit)

It is my opinion that duality makes us who we are. If good and evil did not exist then what would we be? Sheep come to mind here. But so do wolves if you can see them as acting on instincts alone.
We would not know goodness without the existence of badness. We would not know morals without the absence of morals. We would not be able to judge our worth without judging others. We would not judge others if we could not judge ourselves. We could not be in control if we did not know what it was to be out of control. We could not be free and in control without the duality of being controlled by others. We could not question ourselves without the ability to question others. We could not be ambitious without also the ability to be lazy.
It all adds up to the fact that we could not think without the existence of duality. Where did this duality come from?
